Match Report:
The game against Old Ivanhoe was going to be a real challenge, we were coming off two heavy defeats, a large change to the side and Josh being unavailable.
Corey took over the reins in Josh’s absence and gave the team some key KPI’s for the game. Myles “the blanket” Spielvogel was given the task of shutting down a dangerous and inform Ivanhoe forward.
We kicked with the aid of a 3-4 goal wind in the first quarter and started slowly and built momentum throughout the quarter to finish 27 points up at the break. Ben Fynmore in the ruck was winning and giving great service to McClelland and Fujiwara while Spielvogel was covering his opponent while picking up a number of quality possessions.
The second quarter was going to be decisive in the deciding the winner. Kicking into a strong wind we needed to not only hold Ivanhoe but also score. Corey implored the players to run and carry and we did just that. McClelland dominated the quarter and really used the ball well. Spielvogel again had things under control. Dylan Smith was providing great run and carry and Ben “twinkle toes” Kuang was dangerous up forward, a highlight with him centering a pass from the pocket to Matt Ball who converted. Chris Diggle was also playing very well both in the air and at ground level. Going into half time we were 36 point up which was a strong position to be in…..team effort and everybody was contributing.
Kicking with the wind in the third we had the opportunity to put the game away and while playing solid football we were inaccurate and kicked 2-9 but held Ivanhoe scoreless. Matt Ball was working hard, Will Lyon playing consistent footy and Nick Blaich solid in the backline and even sneaking over the center line hoping to get on the scoreboard !
Going into the last quarter it was an even tussle but had things under control. We kicked one goal courtesy of a nice snap by first gamer Matt “Stodds” Stoddard which was great to see as he could have had another 1 or 2 in the third. Matt Ball was working hard playing high forward and then pushing deep into defense when required. Ben Fynmore rucked all day ….great effort. Myles Spielvogel kept his man very quiet while picking up many possessions and Joe “Macca” McClelland played a seriously good four quarter game. Chris “Diggs” Diggle playing his first game also played well with quality possession’s.
At the final siren we won by 53 points….this was a team effort everybody made significant contributions during the game.
