Match Report:
This was a very important game (aren’t they all !). A chance to cement a place in the top 4 before next weeks bye. Greg Meredith was filling in for Josh who was on Hawthorn duties plus having some late withdrawals
Conditions were wet and slippery which made it difficult for clean and high scoring football.
We commenced the game really well kicking 3 goals to Nixon, Lewis and Lyon and held Whitefriars goalless. The backline held firm with Blaich, Simpson and Mowthorpe all having a good quarter. Lewis, Smith and Spielvogel also playing well around the ground.
Whitefriars came back at us during the second quarter, we lost some structure and the ball kept rebounding out of our forward line way too easily. Again credit to the backline for limiting any major damage however we were outscored by a goal. Nixon, Speilvogel, Fynmore, Gagiero (goal), Lyon, Lewis, Allis had good quarters.
The 3rd quarter would be decisive in determining the eventual winner. The team came out and applied great pressure and application . Slack did a few nice things and was providing a strong target at CHF with Scotto repelled some attacking moves at half back. Ball started to come into the game and marked and kicked a long goal, Lyon snapped truly from the goal square and a highlight was Allis drifting forward kicking a long goal on the run after some great team work. We held Whitefriars goalless and put ourselves in a strong position for the last quarter.
Our efforts from the 3rd quarter continued and we dominated the last quarter however we couldn’t get full reward for effort. Wainright was playing well and Simpson was moved forward and kicked a long goal. Nixon (to cap a BOG performance) kicked a soccer goal from deep in the forward pocket was fitting. At the final siren we ran out 37 point winners.
A fitting result and every player contributed…..
