Match Report:
A very evenly matched game against Carey awaited us. While they were a couple of spots lower on the ladder their results were consistent and admirable loss’ against top teams.
Conditions were perfect for the game and the first quarter commenced with CGFC dominating possession but couldn’t say it was quality possession. Spielvogel, Diggle, Jordan McClelland and Amos had plenty of the ball with Kuang and Ball kicking nice goals and looking dangerous. It looked like it might be one of those days, teams have dominate control but can’t score and the opposition have one forward entry for a goal. At quarter time we had 7 scoring shots to 3 and found ourselves 1 point down.
The second quarter was an improvement and we started to convert on the scoreboard. Again midfielder’s Spielvogel, Diggle, Jordan, McClelland were giving good drive and Amos was dominate around the ground. Boal kicked a nice running goal just before being injured and Ball was working himself into the game more kicking another with Diggle. Blaich. Lyon and Simpson continued their recent good form with strong defensive plays when needed and attacking plays when the opportunity arose. We still had problems countering Carey’s attack as sometimes we lost our structure. At half time we were 2 points up.
Commencing the 3rd we lacked drive and structure. Carey were running and creating loose players from greater work ethic and desire. There spread was causing us problems. It was a case of limiting the damage as much as possible. Carey kicked 6 for the quarter as we could only manage 2. It was a position we have found ourselves during that last 2-3 weeks being down at 3 quarter time and requiring a huge effort to win.
The last quarter commenced and it was a transformation. The whole team rallied and kept the ball much of the time in our forward half. The midfielders were on top and the backline were repelling any attacking moves by Carey. Ball was dominant kicking a couple and unluckily not being awarded a “one hander” which was disallowed. The highlight of the quarter/game was Blaich drifting forward to kick a smart across the body goal from 40 out to seal the game. A great win again coming from behind.
