Caulfield  11 – 6 – 72     Defeated      Whitefriars   8 – 10 – 58

This was always going to be an even match with Whitefriars results similar to ours and having played a very close practice match  in which we got pipped only because of limited numbers on the bench.

 

Kicking into a stiff 2-3 goal wind we started well and ran the ball well.  Lachie Nixon in the middle was fighting for everything and Joe McClelland and Aya Fujiwara were also good contributors. At quarter time we were 3 points up which was a good result considering the conditions.

 

The second quarter was an opportunity to use the wind and gain a few goals up on Whitefriars. Unfortunately we couldn’t break away and each team kicked 3 goals for the quarter. Chris Diggle, Ollie “Gadge” Sweetapple- Gagiero, Dylan Smith, Max Simpson playing well.

 

The object of the 3^rd quarter was to stop any Whitefriars run and hopefully kick 1 or 2 goals into the wind to set up the last quarter. It didn’t happen that way and we were comprehensively beaten by run, carry and numbers to the ball. Whitefriars kicked 3 goals (and could have been more) and we didn’t score.  Ben Fynmore, Max Simpson and Myles Spielvogel were working hard but couldn’t stop the Whitefriars attack.

 

At the last break Josh urged his players to run and take the game on and he believed we could win from here.  It was going to take a massive effort from here with the heat starting to rise. Four minutes had passed in the last quarter and we had kicked 3 goals to be 2 points behind.  Joe McClelland and Chris Diggle were dominating with Ben Kuang dangerous across half forward taking a few nice marks and kicking a goal.  Aya Fujiwara kicked a lovely banana goal through traffic, Jack “Waldo” Waldron kicked one and we were on a roll.  More goals to Jack Lewis , Lachie Nixon, Zac Amos and we were home.

 

A great result and contributions from everyone, irrespective of being named in best players or not.
