Match Report:
Epic match loomed at Albert Park ground vs Old Melburnians with both teams fielding strong sides. The ground was heavy and muddy in the centre which was going to make it tough no frills football. TJ on coaching duties in place of Josh.
We started very well kicking the first 3 goals of the match. Thompson, Wallace, Harris and Webster providing drive to our forwards with Ball looking dangerous up forward but then O/M’s came back to even the tempo of the game. Harris “clipped” a lovely goal from 45 which was a highlight. Ball and Spielvogel also goal kickers. At quarter time we were 6 points in front.
During the second quarter the game ebbed and flowed between both teams. No one side gaining any real ascendancy. Dorevitch’s “barrel” goal from the flank in traffic was special. Baltas, Webster, Diggle, Thompson and heavy ground specialist Nixon playing well. At half time we were 7 points in front.
The third quarter was a real opportunity to put some space between the two teams which in a low scoring tight game would be difficult for O/M’s to come back from. Having lost Blaich just before half time TJ rearranged the backline. Really it was another tight quarter each time we kicked a goal O’M’s came back with one. Certainly our ball pressure increased and Jesse Smith giving us first use of the ball in the ruck stoppages, McEvoy’s kicking efficiency was good with Wallace kicking two goals, one streaming from a centre ball up to slot a long goal and Baltas kicking two of his own. We were a little lucky as a couple of turnovers were not punished by O/M’s. O’M’s kicked 1-5 to our 3-2 resulting in a 16 point lead at ¾ time.
The last quarter we started well, unfortunately we kicked 4 points that were all genuine chances. O’M’s first forward move resulted in a goal to make things interesting. The next 15 minutes was goal for goal. Very impressive that each time we were challenged we steadied and came back. Harris leading the way all game. We played a strong and smart last quarter with Baltas kicking a goal on the siren to secure a 20 point victory.
Great game to all ….well played
