Match Report:
A beautiful day for football greeted us for Round 1 at Glenhuntly Park, with the scene set by the Under 19’s who had opened their account comfortably in the early game. Despite the pristine conditions, we took a while to settle and Mazenod kicked the first couple of goals. From there, we were able to gain control of play and despite some wayward kicking (6 behinds) were only 2 point down at the first change. This was confirmed at quarter time once the scoreboard came back online.
After quarter time, the midfield started to take control. Presnell, Easton and Burge were clean at the stoppages and well supplied by the ruckwork of Bednarek, McDonald and Stewart who had taken clear ascendancy over their tiring Mazenod opponents.
The backline tightened up and were initiating many of the attacks from rebound football. Clarky was not letting anything through and Drew Dickson was a rock in the backline.
The forward line were doing their part and kicked 8 goals to 2 in the second and third terms which set the foundation of the win. Handel, Simic and Ossie provided some clean finishing and James Small was a tireless worker across half forward.
Some of the players started to feel the effects of the warm weather and hard work in the previous two terms. Higher rotations through the bench were needed but the Mazenod players seemed to find a leg and kicked a few goals late in the term to have the coaches checking the clock. However, was the good work early in the game was enough to bank the first 4 points of the year and open the account for both the team and first year coaches Spittal and Price.
Competition will be high for spots next week which is a good place to be in.
Go fields!
