The seniors went into Saturday’s game against Old Geelong without a number of key players.

This provided the opportunity for reserves stars Cat Potegieger, Kelly Cosgraves, Sami Stewart, Abbey Hants, Bridget Sung and Kayla De Bondt to step up and play a vital role in what was set to be an important game.

It was wet, windy and cold and both teams knew that they would be up for a fight with the Fields looking to replicate last week’s win and Old Geelong coming off a loss to Old Camberwell last week and looking for redemption.

After watching the reserves go down on the huge ground, the nerves were high as we lined up for the first bounce.

The first quarter was off to a great start with a fantastic first goal from Milly “Beans” Heinz which set the tone early for her BOG performance.

The girls were able to keep control of the ball and created a number of great forward entry opportunities during the first term.

Our stellar back line, led by the unstoppable Issy “Daisy” Thomas, managed to keep Old Geelong goalless until the last three minutes of the quarter when they kicked two goals in quick succession to put them in front by 5 points at the first break.

The second term saw Old Geelong kicking with the wind and three solid fast breaks slowed the Field’s momentum.

Old Geelong had most of the footy in this quarter and they were able to keep the Field’s scoreless, despite Kelly Cosgraves dominating a lot of the day in the ruck.

The score at half time, 34 – 9, left a lot for the Field’s to discuss and apply in the final half.

The third quarter saw Chelsea Fischer and Toni Hamilton continue to apply consistent pressure around the ball, effecting the play at almost every turn.

Our midfielders ensured that whenever the footy was picked up by Montana White or Issy Thomas out of the back line, there were a safe pair of hands to deliver to.

The Field’s were able to convert in the third term, kicking two goals and two behinds. With set shots from Kate Macqueen and Sami Stewart.

With thirteen points the difference heading into the final term, the Field’s were within reach.

The girls came out blazing, out running, out kicking, out marking and increasing the pressure around the field.

The back line had the large task of limiting and preventing Old Geelong’s further opportunities and ensuring that we cleared the footy quickly to convert at the other end, which they did for much of the half until an injury saw a break in play for approximately 35 minutes.

Once the ground was cleared, Old Geelong were able to break away and kick two more goals to cement our defeat.

We wish the injured Old Geelong player all the best and hope that she has a speedy recovery.
