women's match Report: ROUND 1 -
RMIT university vs CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANS
Match Report:
By Georgia Gamble
The lead up to round one is always filled with excitement and nerves and after a solid preseason the girls were more than ready to hit the ground running.
With a number of team changes throughout the week, the senior women’s team started the day with a solid list and plenty of fresh legs for rotation.
For our opponents, RMIT, this was not just round one, but their first game as a club and despite the end scores in both games, both RMIT sides fought hard right until the final siren.
Kicking against the wind in the first quarter, our impenetrable back line allowed us to keep control of the ball and resulted in consistent solid forward entries by star midfielders Ella Baxter, Chelsea Fischer and Rachel Cribb for two goals from Millie Hines and Keirice Farley to RMIT’s two behinds.
The second quarter saw some nerves shaken out and the Fields become more confident and comfortable. Kate Macqueen was strong, deep in the forward line kicking two goals in short succession and we finished the half strong adding to the tally with a goal from Laura Tiernan. The solid backline, led by Issy Thomas and Joey Davey kept RMIT to one behind for the quarter.
Despite some interruptions from injuries in the third quarter, the Fields managed to keep RMIT scoreless for the term and despite not chalking up any goals for the quarter, the girls stayed composed and kept control of the game. The pressure out of the midfield from Chelsea Fischer proving integral to the Field’s game.
Kicking home with the wind, Alice Leven remained dominant in the ruck creating opportunities around the ground which resulted in a five goal quarter by the Fields. Captain, Toni Hamilton also dominated around the ground, providing a safe pair of hands and an even safer kick, kicking her first goal for the season in the last quarter. Rachel Cribb also joined the goal kickers, with Kate Macqueen kicking another two goals to cement the Fields’ 56-point win.
Caulfield Grammarians 10-5-65 defeated RMIT 1-3-9
